At Minster Law, every journey matters. In this series, we’re spotlighting colleagues from across the business to share their stories, exploring the paths they’ve taken, the challenges they’ve overcome, and why they’ve chosen Minster Law as the place to build their careers.
We’ve recently spoken to Tayo Ojelade, Assistant Management Accountant in our Finance team, whose talked us through his journey in the law sector and aspirations for the future.
Why I chose Minster Law
“I was looking for a new job in finance after travelling around America, and an opening came through a recruitment agency at the perfect time. I remember talking to a few other companies about potential roles but when I first entered the Minster Law’s building, I had a feeling straight away that it was a positive place to work.”
“This was only reinforced by the warm welcome at reception and in the interview itself, where I talked to my now team manager, Claire. Claire was keen to know more about my interest in finance, but most importantly, she also wanted to understand my hobbies and my background. It convinced me that Minster Law values its people in their entirety, not just their qualifications or work ethic, and I’m proud to be part of a team like that.”
My experience
“When I graduated in 2023 from Leeds Beckett University with a Bachelor’s in Accounting and Finance, I started my career with a temporary position which lasted six months. It was a good experience but I wanted some time away to reflect on my next job move. After my time spent travelling, I was refreshed and looking for a new challenge.”
“I joined Minster Law in November 2024 and it’s been great for developing my skills and grow not only as an employee, but also as a person. The people around me have allowed me to better understand how my role supports the wider business, gain more confidence in my skills and efficiently tackle challenges, ensuring clients receive timely and effective support.”
My role and responsibilities
“I’ve been an Assistant Accountant for just over a year, and I’m proud to be part of the finance team, making sure our operations run smoothly, helping out with expenses and making sure that that our suppliers are paid correctly and on time.”
“I didn’t expect finance to be as intense, but the team’s collaboration and open communication make it a really rewarding process. It’s been fulfilling to see what I can achieve under pressure, and the supportive environment keeps pushing me to grow.”
The Minster way
“When I was looking for a job, it was important for me to be part of a workplace that encourages professional development as I wanted to study for the ACCA qualification alongside my full-time job. Minster Law is really supportive of my professional goals and has allowed me to pursue my studies, giving me a great opportunity to apply my new knowledge all while gaining valuable experience in a professional environment.”
“The culture here is one of acceptance and inclusivity and I’ve joined the EDI committee recently. It’s been a great opportunity for me to get to know people in the company that I wouldn’t otherwise interact with and discuss topics that are close to my heart.”
“Our EDI committee has recently launched ‘Courageous Conversations’ sessions for our leaders. These sessions aim to build confidence in addressing sensitive topics within their teams—such as cultural differences, migration, and racism—while creating a safe space for open and meaningful dialogue. As part of the committee, I facilitated these sessions and found them very insightful, going well beyond surface-level discussion. It feels rewarding to not only be part of our culture but to actively shape the inclusive culture I’ve always valued.
“I really enjoy working for a firm where everyone is always willing to help, that promotes a healthy work-life balance through flexibility, and values both our shared goals and each individual’s contribution.”
Advice for others
“If you’re starting your career, take your time with tasks and always treat setbacks as chances to grow. You’re never alone: the team is there to support you, so make sure to speak up during times when you might be struggling. Ask questions, stay curious, and you’ll gain an understanding of your colleagues and the workplace that will help you no end as you progress through your career.”
