What is Uninsured Loss Recovery?

Close

Uninsured losses, or ULR, refers to uninsured financial losses arising out of a motor accident. These are losses that are not covered under your standard motor insurance policy.

If you have incurred losses following an accident and you were not at fault, you may be able to pursue a recovery of those losses against the responsible party or their insurance company.

What kind of uninsured losses can I claim for?

Close

Whilst not exhaustive, losses you may be able to claim for include:

  • Insurance policy excess
  • Travel costs (including vehicle hire)
  • Lost earnings due to the accident
  • Damage to personal property such as clothing or spectacles.

How do I prove I have a loss?

Close

Evidence in support of your claim is required. Depending on the loss, this could be in the form of receipts, invoices and replacement estimates along with images of damaged items. Our advice would be to retain evidence of any losses or damage incurred.

My vehicle was repaired/declared a total loss by my insurer following the accident and my excess has been charged. How do I get this back?

Close
  • If your vehicle was repaired following the accident: A copy of your policy excess receipt from the repairing garage will be required to support your loss.
  • If your vehicle was declared a total loss: A letter from your insurance company confirming your policy excess deduction was made from your total loss settlement should suffice.

My no claims’ discount has been affected because of the accident. Can I claim for this?

Close

A ‘no claims’ discount isn’t normally a recoverable loss. If a non-fault claim is successful against the responsible party, or their insurance company, your own insurer may reinstate your discount.

How long will it take for my uninsured losses to be recovered?

Close

It’s difficult to give you an exact timescale without knowing more about your accident as no two claims are the same. Even then, how long it will take depends on whether the other party’s insurer accepts responsibility or not. Regardless of the situation, we’ll work to settle your claim as quickly and efficiently as possible and will keep you up to date with the progress of your claim.
