At Minster Law, every journey matters. In the “My Minster Journey” series, we’ll be spotlighting colleagues from across the business to share their stories, exploring the paths they’ve taken, the challenges they’ve overcome, and why they’ve chosen Minster Law as the place to build their careers.
This time, we’re speaking to Kapledev Ruath, Solicitor Apprentice. What began as a search for experience has become the foundation of his solicitor career, and he is now preparing to take the next step in his Minster journey.
We recently sat down with him to hear about his time at Minster Law so far, the opportunities he’s embraced, and how he feels about the road ahead.
Kapledev, Solicitor Apprentice
Why I chose Minster Law
“I’d studied law at university and was working in an admin job after graduation. Initially, I was looking to go down the route of applying for training contracts, but was receiving feedback that I didn’t have enough experience of working within a law firm.
“When I saw a role become available in the Official Injury Claims (OIC) Disputes team at Minster Law, I applied primarily as I thought it would help me get the experience to take that next step. However, two years later – I’m still here and I’ve never looked back!”
My experience
“I started out in the OIC Disputes team supporting our customers with small injury claims through the portal. Within a year, I’d been promoted to the MoJ Bike team, where I was responsible for managing client cases, drafting legal documents, conducting research to support case preparation, and collaborating with colleagues to ensure customers were given the best possible support.
“I really enjoyed this role, especially feeling that I was able to make a real difference to some of the most vulnerable road users. It’s really motivating to go to work knowing that your efforts are going to directly help people who have often been placed in very tough circumstances.”
My role and responsibilities
“It’s a really exciting time in my career as I step into a new role as a Solicitor Apprentice, taking my first formal steps toward my dream of qualifying as a Solicitor.
I wasn’t aware that Minster Law offered solicitor apprenticeships before I started working here, but I’m so glad that I’ve got the opportunity to stay within the business and continue to develop my skills, all while working towards my qualification.
“For the next three years, I’ll be working four days a week and studying on Fridays, with a mix of office and home working. The apprenticeship will give me the opportunity to work across different areas of the business, helping to deepen my understanding of how the different departments work together to provide the best outcomes for customers.
“I’ll have exams for the first two years, and then my third year will be focused on creating and submitting a portfolio of work. This will be a great opportunity for me to bring together everything I’ve learned, reflecting on how I’ve put it into practice over the course of my apprenticeship.”
The Minster way
“The culture at Minster Law stood out to me immediately. I thought it would be really formal and impersonal, but it’s not like that at all. I feel like I can talk to anyone in the business and that everyone is on the journey together.
“I’m grateful that I’ve also been given the opportunity to take part in committees such as the fast-track engagement committee, as I’m a big advocate for mental health, and have played a role internally in helping colleagues to understand the resources that the business makes available to them in challenging times.”
My advice
“Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. What I thought would be a stepping stone has actually been the foundation for my career as a solicitor.
“I’m very grateful for the investment that the business has made in my development, and I’m so excited to join the other apprentices and begin the next chapter of my Minster journey!”
