Investing in our people through training and ongoing development programmes is important to everyone at Minster Law, which is why we were delighted to win the Doctors Chambers Modern Claims Awards’ Outstanding Commitment to Training category at their annual awards ceremony recently. Our commitment to the continual improvement and evolution of our people and processes resulted in the delivery of more than 21,440 training hours in 2016, and we’re proud that this commitment was recognised by such a prestigious event.

The annual Modern Claims Awards were originally launched in 2015 to celebrate cross-industry talent and success. The awards are open to insurers, brokers, solicitors and all who support the claims industry, enabling industry professionals to come together in celebration of those individuals and businesses who are embracing opportunities in an ever-changing landscape.

Minster Law adopts a blended approach to learning and development, from study sponsorship through CILEx Academy to soft skills development, coaching, regular one-to-ones and e-learning. We’re constantly identifying ongoing training opportunities to ensure our employees are well-equipped to do the best they can for our clients and where possible, we look to promote internal staff into emerging roles first – in 2016 we filled 114 roles with existing employees (32% of all positions filled last year).

To support our people agenda, we continually identify training needs by looking to the external landscape as well as internal requirements. For example, in order to keep pace with the changing shape of the industry, we introduced a ‘Business Seat’ in our 24-month Training Contracts programme for aspiring solicitors.

We believe that business acumen will be more important than ever to the success of our solicitors in a post-reforms legal industry. The introduction of the Business Seat, which is thought to be the first of its kind in the industry, is our commitment to helping develop and shape our solicitors into well-rounded legal professionals and enables trainees to be paired up with a director so that they can understand all aspects of the business and see the contribution the solicitors make to the wider company.

In addition, we recognise the importance of having motivated and effective leaders who can deliver on the challenging agenda of achieving continuous improvement. Leading Our People was introduced in 2015, with the objective of equipping our managers with the support and leadership skills they need to deliver quality management services to colleagues and to foster the growth and development of others as part of the succession plan.

Since its establishment, 66 delegates across all sites have either completed or are currently undertaking the six-month course, promoting cross-departmental networking opportunities and information sharing that may not have otherwise existed. And in a demonstration of leading by example and commitment to continual development, all six members of Minster Law’s Executive team have also joined the 2016/17 cohort.
