From Crash to Comeback: Riding Across Europe to Give Back

How Minster Law helped a keen motorcyclist secure the treatment and support to rebuild his life, and ride again.

Now a peer support volunteer for Day One Trauma Support, John is taking on a four-country motorbike challenge in September 2026 to give back to the charities that helped him.

The accident

In July 2021, John Webber was seriously injured in a road traffic collision. A lifelong motorcyclist, he sustained life-changing injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, various orthopaedic injuries and significant internal injuries. He was admitted to hospital for 52 days, including several weeks in an induced coma in the critical care unit. What followed was a long road of operations and rehabilitation, with John spending extended periods in a wheelchair and facing daily challenges around pain and mobility.

How Minster Law supported John

John’s claim was handled by Stacy Clements, Partner and Principal Solicitor for Spinal Cord Injury. The defendant insurer agreed to fund rehabilitation under the Rehabilitation Code, which John accepted. Minster Law also made sure the right support was in place around him, arranging dedicated case management to coordinate his rehabilitation and keep his recovery on track. That support opened the door to specialist treatment, including a custom brace that helped John take his first unaided steps in years.

He approached his rehabilitation with determination, commitment and his trademark good humour. John worked relentlessly to make the best possible recovery he could, despite battling pain and difficulties around his mobility in particular. The claim settled in December 2023, giving John the security to buy and adapt a home of his own and to focus fully on the next chapter of his recovery.

Giving back

“Motorbikes have been my love and passion since I was six. After the accident there were so many things I was told I would never do again,” John said. “You can either give up, or you can turn it into a positive and get on with it. I couldn’t give up. I didn’t want my kids to see me like that. There is life after trauma, and people need to see that.”

He now volunteers as a peer supporter for Day One Trauma Support, drawing on his own experience to reassure others at the start of their recovery journey. In September 2026, he will take on an epic motorbike challenge across four countries, raising funds and awareness for three charities that have supported him along the way: Day One Trauma Support, The Bike Experience and the National Association for Bikers with a Disability.

For John, the challenge is about more than the miles. “If I can give someone a little bit of hope and belief, and give back to the charities that helped me, it will all be worth it,” he said.
