Criminal Injury
Have you been a Victim of Crime?
You may be entitled to Compensation
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme was established to compensate victims of crime.
The scheme allows compensation to be awarded for:
- Physical and mental injuries which have been caused by a violent crime.
- In some circumstances it may compensate for past or future lost earnings or in some cases expenses incurred as a result of a violent crime.
- People who have lost a spouse, partner, child or parent to a fatal criminal injury can also claim compensation
For your application to be considered you must have:
- Been injured as a result of a violent crime in Great Britain. It is not necessary for the offender to have been convicted or even charged with the offence, though you must have assisted the police with their enquiries and supported any investigation if asked to.
- Made your application for compensation within two years of the incident which resulted in the injury.
- Been injured seriously enough to qualify for at least the minimum award payable under the scheme which is currently £1,000.
- Reported the incident personally to the police including obtaining a crime reference number as soon as was practicably possible after the incident took place.
