Insurance Fraud At Record High
According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), approximately 122,000 fraudulent claims were detected by insurers during 2009, worth a record £840 million. This represents a 14% rise on 2008.
The rise is likely to be due to a number of factors, in particular insurers becoming increasingly sophisticated at detecting fraud and an increase in the number of people submitting bogus claims due to the economic situation.
Overall, insurers uncovered an average of 2,000 dishonest claims worth £16 million every week. Figures show that motor insurance fraud accounted for nearly half of the total, with claims amounting to £410 million uncovered by insurers.
Nick Starling, the ABI’s director of general insurance, said “Our honest customers rightly object to having to pay higher premiums to subsidise the fraudulent minority, which is why insurers continue to up their game in the war on the cheats”.
